I’ve always enjoyed Tetris, even though I was never particularly good at it. After reading this story last week about the tragic life of Tetris co-creator Vladimir Pokhilko, I got the urge to play for the first time in years. I tried searching the Mac App Store for “Tetris”, expecting to find dozens of crummy knock-offs, but instead was surprised to find “Your search had no results”. Nothing. (There is an official iOS version from Electronic Arts, but come on, Tetris needs real buttons.)
Enter TETRIS in the search bar and press on the icon of the app to enter on the app details. Click on “install” to launch the download and the install of the app (green or blue button). Although Tetris Classic is little more than a fancy-rewrite of the original blockbuster Tetris, it does have many added features that make it a good alternative to the original, especially the stunning VGA graphics that brings classic Russian fairy tales to life as you progress through each level. The game also features traditional Russian melodies and a bevy of updated sound effects.
I tried looking outside the Mac App Store, and as far as I can tell, there’s no official Tetris for Mac, nor are there any clones. Quinn was a decent clone I remember playing a decade ago, but as this Boing Boing report from 2006 says, the developer got a cease and desist from The Tetris Company and abandoned the game. (You can still play it on High Sierra, but it’s not retina, and worse, you can only download unsigned versions from sketchy download sites.)
So as far as I can tell, not only is there no official Tetris for Mac, there are no Tetris-like games either. Back in the 90s, there were several really good Tetris games for the Mac. Anyone remember Wesleyan Tetris? It was a goofy version in which the developer, Randall Cook, would rudely critique your gameplay.
If The Tetris Company wants to protect the name “Tetris”, fine, but I think it sucks that there’s no good way to play the game on a Mac today. Every computer should have a good version of Tetris.

Super Tetris is a puzzle game developed by Sphere and published by MicroProse in 1992 for the Amiga. It was later released for MS-DOS and Mac OS.
The company founded by Sid Meier wanted to make its version of the game designed in 1984 by Aleksei Pázhitnov in the Soviet Union. Among all the variants of the original Tetris, this is the seventeenth.
Super Tetris contains its own characteristics that differentiate it from the rest.
First of all, several types of resources were added to the players. An example of this is lightning bolts, which can be used to remove a whole row. Then, bombs were added. They appear in some blocks, and when placed in a line that is filled, they explode and break several blocks. A kind of Candy Crush! This installment also has essential additions to the multiplayer mode: now users can play for the first time in cooperative mode, in addition to the competitive one.
The game also had changes in the graphic part. Even though it retained the vivid colors that featured in previous games, now predominates a warmer palette with a few exceptions with pastel colors. The player is also accompanied by a background where different images of the Moscow circus appear. Without forgetting a piece of thematic music for the occasion, with happy and festive tunes.
Super Tetris is the perfect combination between the classic game and its interpretation of a company with the weight of MicroProse. If you want to see how this mix shines, with just a few clicks, you have the opportunity to play it.
